Mission Dolores

by Jill

Mission Dolores is a two-for-one deal when it comes to this line. The Mission, which is the namesake of its neighborhood, is the city's oldest intact building dating back to 1776. The Mission is still part of an active Catholic church, Mission Dolores Basilica Parish, and includes both the original structure with its elaborate ceiling and the neighboring ornate early 1900s basilica, both of which are open to the public. Visitors can also wander through the adjacent cemetery and stop to smell the roses in the well-tended garden. As for the mystery, if you have seen Hitchcock's Vertigo (side note: see it before coming to SF), you will recognize Mission Dolores from Madeline's visit to the grave of Carlotta Valdes. There you have it: history and mystery. Everyone loves a double feature.
