Asian Art Museum

"Art" museum is a bit of a understated misnomer for this San Francisco great. Although the Asian Art Museum is a place to see ... yes, Asian art, lessons in culture and history are pleasantly inevitable. The permanent collection covers a mind-blowing six thousand years worth of creation and creativity and includes ceramics, statuary, clothing and armor, calligraphy, jade and elaborate lacquered items. Temporary exhibitions vary but are usually fantastic - past examples have included Shanghai, a collection of paintings, photographs, advertisements and Shanghai deco items circa 1930 from the height of Shanghai's glamour and Lords of the Samurai showcasing items from daimyo culture in feudal Japan. A must visit for locals and tourists alike.http://www.asianart.org/
